  1. Léonie Gagné and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin presented a conference intitled “Practical advice to claim adjusters : from the loss to the trial”

    On May 11, Léonie Gagné and Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin, respectively an associate and a partner from our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group presented a seminar to claim adjusters from Cuierrier & Associés and select clients at the Le Mirage Golf Club in Terrebonne. Entitled “Practical advice to claim adjusters: from the loss to the trial”, the seminar provided claim adjusters with advice to assist them when investigating and recovering indemnities paid by the insurer as well as with the insured’s defense. The conference covered among other subjects the drafting a reservation of rights letter, notices that can be sent by claim adjusters, a review of the new Code of Civil Procedure, and an overview of related decisions.

  2. Benjamin Gross panelist at the ELFA Legal Forum

    On May 7, Benjamin Gross, a partner of the Business Law group and the co-chair of the Infrastructure Law group, participated as a panelist during the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) Legal Forum held May 7 to 9 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Entitled Canada and Mexico – What You Need to Know, Mr. Gross highlighted similarities in United States, Canada and Québec laws and demonstrated how typical transactions elsewhere can be structured simply in Québec, while reviewing recent case law that had an impact on Canadian transactions.

  3. Valérie Belle-Isle speaks at the Strategic Day on Administrative Law

    Valérie Belle-Isle, an associate of the Public and Administrative Law group, spoke at the Strategic Day on Administrative Law, held on April 26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Montréal. Entitled Les 5 incontournables de la Cour suprême du Canada en droit administratif, Ms. Belle-Isle reviewed the top 5 administrative law decisions rendered last year by the Supreme Court, and highlighted the approaches adopted by the different Supreme Court judges with respect to the judicial review of decisions by administrative tribunals.

  4. Frédéric Laflamme hosts the 7th edition of Toute la ville parle PME

    Frédéric Laflamme, an associate in the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group, hosted the 7th edition of Toute la ville parle PME, organized by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Shawinigan and held on May 11 at the Maison de la culture Francis-Brisson. Similar in concept to the Francophone talk show Tout le monde en parle, the event follows the path and experiences of nine Shawinigan entrepreneurs as they start-up, consolidate or expand.

  5. Lavery GO inc. partners with Startup Salad MTL 2017

    Concordia University hosted Startup Salad x MTL 2017, a competition organized by the Asian-Pacific Youth Entrepreneurship Foundation (“APYEF”) and held May 5 to 7, 2017. This year’s winning team was awarded the services of the Lavery GO inc. Program. Martin Bédard, Shan Jiang, Felicia Jin and Sonia Rasquinha attended to listen to the teams’ presentations and award the prize to the winner. Startup Salad is a competition banner that hosts events in over 50 cities worldwide. This year’s competition took place in Montréal thanks to the APYEF, a Montréal-based association that seeks to establish an Asia-Pacific sharing platform for young entrepreneurs. Competitors had 52 hours to form teams and prepare a business plan. Each team then had to present their plan to a panel of professionals who selected the winning team.

  6. Justin Trudel elected to the Board of Supervision of the Caisse Desjardins de l’Est de Trois-Rivières

    Justin Trudel, an associate with the Business Law group, was elected to the Board of Supervision of the Caisse Desjardins de l’Est de Trois-Rivières during the annual general meeting held on April 24. As a board member, Mr. Trudel will be responsible for overseeing the Caisse operations and activities from the perspective of ethics, professional conduct and cooperation. In the course of his duties, he will also participate in drafting opinions and recommendations to the Board of Directors in order to optimize oversight mechanisms and ensure the good governance of the Caisse.

    Lavery is pleased to announce the arrival of two new lawyers, Sophie Roy and Isabel Valenta. Sophie Roy is joining the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group. Her practice focuses on insurance law, product liability, and professional liability. Isabel Valenta is joining the Business Law group. Her practice focuses on corporate financing, reorganizations and mergers and acquisitions. Isabel has experience representing start-ups and works closely with companies from the technology, e-commerce, renewable energy, manufacturing and textile industries.

    On April 26, Lavery welcomed a delegation of French business leaders during the Québec, porte d'entrée de l'Amérique du Nord (Quebec, the gateway to North America) tour organized by International Mission and held from April 25 to 27. Pierre Marc Johnson, counsel and chief negotiator for Quebec for the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), discussed the different business opportunities available in Quebec, particularly in light of the European Parliament’s recent ratification of the CETA.

  10. Charles Olivier Thibeault speaks at the Annual Interdisciplinary Conference 2017

    Charles Olivier Thibeault, an associate with the Health and Social Services group, spoke at the 4th edition of the Annual Interdisciplinary Conference 2017, held April 20 and 21 at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Montréal. His presentation was entitled D’avocat à conseiller: sortir de la pratique conventionnelle pour faire du droit autrement and discussed how having two degrees (law and health administration) has a positive influence on the way in which he practises law. Mr. Thibeault also pointed out the advantages and obstacles that arise when handling files involving professionals from different fields.

  11. Marie Cossette and Charlotte Fortin participate in the Strategic Day on Disciplinary Law

    Marie Cossette, the partner responsible for the Corporate and Business Integrity and Public and Administrative Law groups for the Québec City office, and Charlotte Fortin, a lawyer in the Public and Administrative Law group, participated in the Strategic Day on Disciplinary Law organized by Open Forum and held at the Hyatt Regency in Montréal on April 25. Marie Cossette, honorary chair, discussed the role of the board of directors of a professional order in light of Bill 98, while Charlotte Fortin spoke about “The “Top 10” Decisions in Disciplinary Law in 2016”.
