  2. Guillaume Lavoie participates in Rendez-vous Montréal inc.

    On June 14, Guillaume Lavoie, a partner and head of the Lavery CAPITAL group, presented the LAVERY grant to Les matériaux Redwood inc., represented by its founder Marc Elliott, during the Rendez-vous Montréal inc. The event, organized by Fondation Montréal Inc. and presented by the National Bank, was held in the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec Parquet.   Fondation Montréal inc. is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to encourage the success of a new generation of Montréal entrepreneurs with the help of donors and experienced volunteer business people. Guillaume Lavoie has volunteered with Fondation Montréal inc. for many years.

  3. Laurence Bich-Carrière publishes an article in Cahiers de propriété intellectuelle

    Laurence Bich-Carrière, a lawyer of the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group, wrote an article entitled “Quelques décisions d’intérêt en matière de cyberdiffamation 2016” that was published in the most recent issue of Cahiers de propriété intellectuelle.   In her case comment, she reviews a number of cyber defamation decisions rendered in 2016 and recommends the cases to follow in 2017. The article discusses various topical subjects such as private international defamation law, the right to be forgotten, and the liability of search engines, Internet archives, or Facebook friends for defamatory comments made by third party, addressed by decisions such as Goldhar v. Haaretz, 2016 ONCA 515, A.B. c. Google inc., 2016 QCCS 4913, Chiara c Vigile Québec, 2016 QCCS 5167 and others.

  9. Louis Rochette (1957-2017) - Homage to a professional dedicated to Québec City’s business community

    It was with great sadness that Lavery de Billy recently learned of the death of its partner Louis Rochette. “Louis Rochette, who worked for our firm since 1995 was a vital force in Québec City’s business community. His skills, passion and vast knowledge of the law which he shared with all members of the firm, especially the junior lawyers, was appreciated by all. We have lost not only a partner but a friend”, said Daniel Bouchard, managing partner of Lavery’s Québec City office. Mr. Rochette practiced primarily in the areas of business law, life sciences and health establishments, focussing on financing, corporate and contractual transactions, high technology, intellectual property and the marketing of university research results. He represented large financial institutions and many public and private companies in both Montréal and Québec City. Mr. Rochette was listed since 2012 in The Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading practitioner in the field of health care law. Since 2008, he also served as Belgium’s Honorary Consul in Québec City and was managing partner of the Québec City office from 2004 to 2012. His commitment to Québec’s business milieu and his active involvement in cultural and charitable organizations was recognized by his peers. He held the following Board positions: President of the Société du Grand théâtre de Québec (since 2015) Director of the Centre de recherche informatique de Montréal (since 2010) Co-Chair of the 2015 edition of Leucan’s Shaved Head fundraising campaign President of the Association des consuls honoraires for the Québec City area (2013-2016) Director of the Société du 400e anniversaire de la ville de Québec (2006-2010) Director of the executive committee of the Québec City Port Authority (2005-2008) President of the Pôle Québec-Chaudière-Appalaches audit committee (now Québec International) (2002-2009) President of the Corporation de la Salle Albert-Rousseau inc. (1996-2015) President of the Québec City Summer Festival (1994-1995) Director of the Québec City Summer Festival (1992-1997) “Other than his professional duties, he was first and foremost a man devoted to his family. His wife, four children and grandson meant everything to him. He was also a sincere and faithful colleague who developed strong and unwavering friendships during his life”, Daniel Bouchard concluded. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, his friends and those who knew him, whether at the firm, in cultural organizations or Québec City’s business community in which he was actively involved.

  10. Jean-Philippe Turgeon moderates the franchisors’ round table

    Jean-Philippe Turgeon, the partner responsible for the Franchising and Distribution group, moderated a round table of franchisors organized by Lavery in collaboration with the Conseil québécois de la franchise held on June 9 at the Lavery Conference Centre in Montréal. The round table theme was Investissez-vous votre budget marketing national auprès des bons médias publicitaires ? The event brought together Véronique Desrosiers, co-president of communication and marketing companyÉcorce and Marc-André Rivard, owner ofCommunications Récréation, and franchisors learned about the best media placement marketing strategies.

  11. Gérard Mounier appointed to the board of directors of the Infrastructure Council

    On May 31, Gérard Mounier, a strategic advisor with the Business Law group and co-chair of the Infrastructure group, was appointed to the board of directors of the Infrastructure Council. Part of his mandate will be to further the three main principles of the Council, which are to i) promote advantageous partnerships for the community, ii) intervene objectively with public organizations and iii) foster technological innovation and sustainable economic development while ensuring the good governance of the organization.

  12. Lavery commits to healthy living by participating in the 1,000 km event of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie

    From June 15 to 18, a team made up of firm members participated in the 1,000 km event of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie. The challenge was to cycle from Saguenay to Montréal, via Mont Tremblant and Gatineau, to raise funds and promote healthy living and the benefits of sport for the young and the not-so-young. Funds raised will be used to support initiatives for students at the Versant Sainte-Geneviève school in Québec City. This participation confirms Lavery’s deep commitment to community engagement and the quality of its role as a corporate citizen.
