Lavery holds a labour and employment symposium in Sherbrooke
The Sherbrooke edition of Lavery’s Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law was held on June 14 at the Delta Hotel. Participants attended various workshops facilitated by Dave Bouchard, Geneviève Chamberland and Danielle Gauthier. The speakers discussed a variety of subjects, including how to successfully terminate an employment, recent developments in labour law, and managing violent behaviour and threats in the workplace.

Luc Thibaudeau receives an award for engagement from Éducaloi
Luc Thibaudeau, a partner of the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group, received an award for his engagement from Éducaloi during their annual meeting held on June 6 at the Maison du Barreau. The award recognizes Mr. Thibaudeau’s involvement with the organization, in particular the many times he has delivered Éducaloi workshops in high schools. Éducaloi is a registered Quebec charity that has been playing a leading role in improving access to justice since it was founded in 2000. Its mission is to inform the public about the law and their rights and obligations. To achieve this, it carries out activities in three areas: legal information, legal education and developing an expertise in explaining the law in plain and simple language.

The Trois-Rivières edition of Lavery’s Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law was held on June 13 at the Hôtel Gouverneur. Participants attended various workshops facilitated by Jean Boulet, Nicolas Courcy, Myriam Lavallée and Carl Lessard. The speakers discussed a variety of subjects, including best practices when hiring and terminating an employment, managing employees with difficult behaviour or in psychological distress, and renegotiating collective agreements.

Awatif Lakhdar speaks at a CBA-Québec mini-seminar
On June 7, Awatif Lakhdar, a partner of the Family, Personal and Estate Law group, spoke at a mini-seminar organized by the Wills, Estates and Trusts section of the Canadian Bar Association - Québec Division, held at the Lavery Conference Centre in Montréal and attended by over 45 lawyers. Entitled “Planification successorale et droits matrimoniaux : Avez-vous vraiment tout prévu ?”, Ms. Lakhdar addressed the challenges with foreign-born spouses. She specifically discussed the international jurisdiction of Quebec courts, the doctrine of international litispendence, the application of the rules on family patrimony and the qualification of the matrimonial regime.

Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur speaks at the ACUQ
This spring, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, delivered four four-hour training sessions for close to one hundred emergency call centre workers in Québec. These sessions were delivered as part of a skills improvement program created by the Association des centres d’urgence du Québec (ACUQ). Entitled Médias sociaux et confidentialité de l’information, the training reviewed the legal obligations by which emergency call centre workers are bound and analyzed the employment impact of disclosing confidential or other information obtained in the course of employment on social media.

Pierre Marc Johnson speaks at the 8th edition of the Québec Industrial Barometer
On May 12, Pierre Marc Johnson, counsel and lead negotiator for the Quebec government on the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), commented on the results of the 8th edition of the Québec Industrial Barometer during an event organized by Sous-Traitance Industrielle Québec (STIQ). At the same time, he informed the manufacturers present that it was important to put in place a European Union export strategy and action plan given the CETA’s imminent provisional entry into force. Since 2009 STIQ has been publishing the Québec Industrial Barometer, which draws an annual portrait of the manufacturing sector using a series of measurable indicators and provides an overview of the situation in Quebec.

Lavery’s Montréal 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law an unqualified success
Lavery’s 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law held in Montréal was an unqualified success. About 500 people attended the event held June 7 at the Centre Mont-Royal to learn about recent developments in this area. The symposium was hosted by Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, partners of the Labour and Employment Law group. Participants also attended a number of workshops facilitated by Dave Bouchard, Élodie Brunet, Nicolas Courcy, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, Carl Lessard, Josiane L’Heureux, Zeïneb Mellouli and Véronique Morin. The speakers addressed a variety of subjects, including best practices when hiring and terminating employment, managing employees with difficult behaviour or in psychological distress, telework and renegotiating a collective agreement.

On May 10, Marie-Josée Hétu, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at an event organized by the RH Réseau de Drummondville (HR network). Approximately thirty human resources managers attended the breakfast seminar, where key labour and employment law cases from the past year and recent legislative developments were reviewed.

Marie Cossette and Chloé Fauchon speak at the 2017 AÉECQ Convention
On May 25, Marie Cossette, partner and head of the Business Integrity practice and the Quebec City Public and Administrative Law group, and Chloé Fauchon, an associate with the same group, spoke at the 2017 Convention of the Association des estimateurs et des économistes de la construction du Québec (AEÉCQ), which was held May 25-26 at the Loews Hôtel Vogue in Montreal. Entitled Bill 108: highlights of the new rules on public contracting and the powers of the Autorité des marchés publics, the presentation answered many questions about the newly created Autorité des marchés publics (AMP) introduced in Bill 108, in particular the amendments tabled by the Minister subjecting municipalities to the AMP. Guillaume Lavoie participates in a McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA panel on governance
On June 13, Guillaume Lavoie, partner and head of the Lavery CAPITAL and Mergers and Acquisitions groups, will participate in a panel on governance organized by McGill-HEC Montréal EMBA being held at the HEC Montréal. Entitled Les défis et enjeux de la gouvernance, the panel will address the various issues and challenges faced by different industries and types of organizations to stimulate a discussion on governance based on concrete examples experienced by the panelists. The panel will also include Louise St-Pierre, former CEO of Cogeco Connexion, Josée Duplessis, Chief of Staff for the Federal Minister of Family, Children and Social Development and Ginette Mailhot, founder of Capital Humain Plus and a director of Anges Québec.
