  1. Lavery and the Fondation Montréal inc. launch a $15,000 grant for artificial intelligence

    Lavery and Fondation Montréal inc. are pleased to announce the creation of the Lavery AI Grant offered to start-ups in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Valued at $15,000, grant winners will also have access to the full range of services provided by Fondation Montréal inc., as well as legal coaching by Lavery, tailored to the needs of young businesses in the artificial intelligence industry. The Lavery AI Grant is an annual grant and will be awarded each spring by Fondation Montréal inc. and Lavery to the start-up that has made the biggest impact in the area of artificial intelligence and that demonstrates great potential for growth. “With each passing day, Montréal is becoming the world city for artificial intelligence and six months ago, Lavery created an AI legal laboratory to analyze and predict the impact of AI in specific areas of the law, from intellectual property to the protection of personal information, including corporate governance and every aspect of business law. Our intention in creating this grant was to resolutely propel start-ups working in this activity sector and offer them legal guidance using the knowledge we developed in our laboratory,” stated Guillaume Lavoie, a partner and head of the Lavery CAPITAL group. “Young entrepreneurs are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into the core of their business model.   2. Jean-Yves Simard panelist at the 13th edition of the CBA National Insolvency Law Conference

    On September 15, Jean-Yves Simard, a partner of the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group, served as a panelist during the 13th edition of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Insolvency Law Conference, held in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The panel entitled Annual Cross-Canada Update reviewed Canadian insolvency case law from the past year. Mr. Simard discussed recent developments in insolvency law in the province of Quebec. Mr. Simard currently serves as secretary for the CBA National Insolvency Law Section.

  3. Two Lavery teams from Sherbrooke participate in the Relais du Lac Memphrémagog

    On September 23, two teams from the Sherbrooke office participated in the Relais du Lac Memphrémagog to raise money for the Fondation Christian Vachon, whose mission is to support school perseverance by helping children at risk. The two teams overcame the challenge, running 122.4 km and raising a combined total of $4,500, despite the sweltering heat. Participation in this activity confirms Lavery’s deep commitment to community engagement and the quality of its role as a corporate citizen.   4. Lavery holds a seminar on business integrity

    On September 21, Lavery organized a breakfast seminar at its Montréal office entitled Une enquête vous concerne : êtes-vous prêt ? toidentify the internal and external risks facing businesses and the tools to put in place to manage these risks. The event was moderated by Nicolas Gagnon and businesses attending heard Marie Cossette, Raymond Doray and Philippe Frère, all partners and members of the Integrity group, discuss various subjects including corporate criminal and penal liability, investigatory powers of public bodies, and whistleblowers.   5. Lavery named Regional Law Firm of the Year by Chambers Canada

  7. Josiane L’Heureux elected at the Board of Directors of CACE

    Josiane L’Heureux, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers (CACE) during CACE’s annual conference that took place in Calgary from September 14 to 16, 2017. Once again, Lavery was well represented at the Conference, as Brittany Carson, Zeïneb Mellouli and Guy Lavoie were in attendance. Guy Lavoie was a member of the organizing committee of the Conference, and he chaired the very last panel of the Conference. CACE regroups approximately 1,300 management-side lawyers in Labour and Employment Law from all Canadian provinces.

  10. Lavery represents Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners in a US$1.5 billion acquisition

    As legal advisors for the Quebec portion of the transaction, Lavery represented the affiliates of Aspen Skiing Company, LLC and KSL Capital Partners, LLC during the acquisition of Intrawest Resorts Holdings, Inc., a ski resort operator and adventure company in North America that owns Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec. The transaction closed on July 31, 2017, for an approximate aggregate value of US$1.5 billion and created a new entity with a property portfolio of 12 four-season mountain resorts, 20,000 skiable acres, significant land available for real estate development, and Canadian Mountain Holidays, a leading heli-ski operator. The Lavery team was headed by Sébastien Vézina and François Arseneault (Corporate) and included Carole Gélinas and Mathieu Cantin (Real Estate), Audrey-Julie Dallaire and Daniel Bouchard (Environment), Zeïneb Mellouli (Labour), Eric Lavallée (Intellectual Property) and Maxime Rousseau-Turenne and Luc Thibaudeau (Litigation).

  11. Marie Cossette becomes ambassador for the CCIQ Leadership au féminin program
