Lavery, sponsors an award of the Association québécoise d’établissements de santé et de services sociaux (AQESSS)
During the Annual AQESSS Convention, Lavery was the sponsor of the 2013 AQESSS Award in Human Resources. Ms. Zeïneb Mellouli, a Labour and Employment Law associate at Lavery, handed out the $5,000 award to the prize-winner, the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM) for a project entitled Nos bons coups en valeurs. Jacques Perron, mentor of Droit de Cité’s grand finale winning team
Lavery is pleased to announce that Mr. Jacques Perron, a Litigation partner at Lavery, acted as a mentor to a team made up of two Université de Montréal law students, Dominique Noel and Frédérik Forget, who won Droit de Cité’s grand finale that was held on May 30, 2013 during the Barreau du Québec Annual Congress. The winning team received a $5,0000 scholarship awarded by the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr. Pierre Duchesne.Co-produced by the radio station CIBL 101,5, Juripop and the Barreau du Québec, Droit de Cité is a 30-episode radio broadcast series enabling young university or Cégep students to discuss major social issues within an open debate formula. Lavery is pleased to have taken part in an activity supported by the Barreau du Québec. Considering his long-standing teaching experience, Mr. Perron was the right choice to act as mentor.

A significant pro bono partnership agreement between the firm and YWCA Québec
Lavery is pleased to announce the completion of a pro bono partnership agreement between the firm and YWCA Québec. Ms. Marie-Hélène Riverin, associate at Lavery’s Quebec City office, was actively involved in the negotiations leading up to the agreement, which represents one of the first partnerships under the auspices of Pro Bono Québec between a law firm and a community organization located in the Greater Quebec City Area.The partnership agreement provides that Lavery shall give YWCA Québec beneficiaries free lectures on various legal issues. The agreement also provides that free legal services shall be made available to YWCA Québec.Lavery and YWCA Québec already have an excellent working relationship. For the last three years, the firm has been offering volunteer training courses through the YWCA Québec program Leader et décisionnelle. The program offers beneficiaries and women in general valuable information on the operations of boards of directors."This partnership agreement between Lavery and YWCA Québec speaks eloquently to our firm’s commitment in the community. Even though we fully support the long-standing community involvement of several of our lawyers, we sincerely believe that pro bono initiatives at the firm level go hand in hand with various individual initiatives", said Don McCarty, Managing Partner of the firm.

Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, speaker at a seminar of the Éditions Yvon Blais
Ms. Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, a Labour and Employment Law associate at Lavery, gave a conference entitled “Faire face à la responsabilité accrue en matière de santé et sécurité du travail” (Facing growing occupational health and safety liability claims) during a one-day seminar organized in Quebec City on May 15, 2013 by the publisher Éditions Yvon Blais as part of its training activities. The seminar drew some 50 people.The conference of Ms. Jolicoeur focused on penal fines imposed to employers under An Act Respecting Occupational Health and Safety as well as on criminal negligence. Ms Jolicoeur also provided a summary of the recent case law in that regard.

Pierre-L. Baribeau recipient of the 2013 pro Bono-Rajpattie-Persaud Award
Lavery is pleased to announce that Mr. Pierre-L. Baribeau, a Labour and Employment Law partner at Lavery, has received the 2013 Pro Bono-Rajpattie-Persaud Award during the Annual Presidential Dinner of the Québec Branch of the Canadian Bar Association (ABC-Québec) that was held on May 23, 2013 at the Hotel Hyatt Regency Montreal.This award recognizes each year the exceptional contribution of a member of ABC-Québec to the community. Mr. Baribeau’s long-standing community involvement is expressed by his commitment in various foundations and non-profit organizations. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Quebec Lung Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Boscoville 2000, a troubled youth help centre."Pierre Baribeau fully deserves this award handed out by ABC-Québec. Lavery is proud to have such a distinguished lawyer within its ranks. Whether he is representing important clients or doing community work, Pierre always stays true to his values. When a cause is dear to his heart, he wholeheartedly embraces it. Lavery, sponsor of the 2013 Congress of the Quebec Bar
Lavery is pleased to sponsor the 58th edition of the Congress of the Quebec Bar that will take place on May 30-31 and June 1, 2013 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. The 2013 edition of the Congress will be held under the theme "You are key to the solution". More specifically, the Congress will focus on the lawyer as an agent of social change and on the legal solutions he can provide to improve society.Ms. Marie Cossette, a Litigation partner at Lavery, is a member of the Organizing Committee for the 2013 Congress. Her involvement shows the firm’s support for the Quebec Bar’s mission. Marie-Claude Perreault, speaker at the Rassemblement pour la santé et le mieux-être en entreprise
Ms. Marie-Claude Perreault, CIRC, a Labour and Employment Law partner at Lavery, gave a talk entitled “Les politiques alcool / drogue en milieu de travail : De l’accommodement aux ententes particulières” (Workplace alcohol and drug policies: From accommodation to specific arrangements) during the first edition of the Rassemblement pour la santé et le mieux-être en entreprise that was held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal on May 13-14, 2013.Lavery was a sponsor for this event, which gave Ms. Perreault the opportunity to introduce a renowned speaker: Mr. Pierre Lavoie, a committed athlete who put together the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie to encourage elementary school pupils in Quebec to adopt healthy life habits.This conference, which drew more than 1,500 participants who are active in workplace health services in Quebec, represents the most significant event focused on innovative health initiatives and enterprise performance issues. The event also included a large Exhibitors’ Hall and offered many networking opportunities.

A first term for Léa Maalouf on the Board of Directors of the Young Bar Association of Montreal
During its Annual General Meeting, held on May 10, the Young Bar Association of Montreal (YBAM) announced the election results for various positions. Ms. Léa Maalouf, a Litigation lawyer at Lavery, was elected for a first term as administrator on the YBAM Board of Directors for 2013-2014.Founded in 1898, the YBAM represents lawyers with 10 years or less of practice, registered in the Montreal area. The mission of the YBAM is to defend and promote its members’ interests. It also offers various segments of the population consulting and legal information on a volunteer basis, besides organizing charitable activities. Overall, the YBAM seeks to improve access to justice and contribute to the well-being of the community.

Dina Raphaël, author of an article in Sécurité financière magazine
Ms. Dina Raphaël, a Litigation partner at Lavery, published an article entitled “Vous êtes au cœur d’une tourmente juridique : Que faire ?” (In the midst of legal turmoil: Your options) in the April-May 2013 issue of Sécurité financière magazine, a publication of the Chambre de la sécurité financière. In this article, which is intended for the members of the Chambre de la sécurité financière, Ms. Raphaël discusses the various ways of coping with a disciplinary complaint or a civil remedy. Marc-Étienne Vien-Desbiens, recipient of the Lavery Cup at the 2013 edition of the Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition
Lavery is pleased to mention that Marc-Étienne Vien-Desbiens, a law student at Université Laval, was awarded the Lavery Cup for “Third Best Litigator” during the 35th edition of the Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition, which was held at Université Laval in 2013. Marie-Claude Cantin and Louis-Martin Dubé, authors of an article on the Regulation to improve building safety
Ms. Marie-Claude Cantin, a Litigation partner at Lavery, and Mr. Louis-Martin Dubé, a Business Law partner at Lavery, wrote an article entitled “New by-law regarding building safety: Imposes onerous obligations on owners” that was published in the last issue of Espace Montréal magazine, a quarterly publication.The article focuses on the Regulation’s new provisions with respect to façades and multistorey garages, which came into force on March 18, 2013. Ms. Julie Cousineau and Mr. Jean-Sébastien Desroches, practising at Lavery in the areas of litigation and business law respectively, acted as co-speakers during the annual seminar organized by the Groupement des chefs d’entreprise du Québec, which was held on May 2, 2013 in Saint-Hyacinthe under the theme “Alliances et collaborations rentables” (Profitable Alliances and Partnerships).The event was very successful, drawing some 400 people, mostly business leaders from Quebec and Europe.
