  1. Emmanuel Sala, co-speaker on flow-through shares

    On October 1st, 2015, Mr. Emmanuel Sala, a partner at Lavery, and Mr. Robin Lévesque of the financial services firm Brassard, Goulet Yargeau, gave a conference organized jointly with the Association de planification fiscale et financière (APFF) and entitled “Actions accréditives: Revue des aspects financiers et développements récents en matière fiscal” (Flow-through shares: a review of the financial aspects and recent developments in tax matters), which was presented to the business community in Quebec City. On this occasion, they reviewed the main financial and tax aspects to consider when investors purchase flow-through shares. Special attention was given to the most recent changes in tax matters and both speakers differentiated between the good and not so good strategies in this field.

  2. Louis-Martin Dubé, panelist at the Montréal Real Estate Strategy & Leasing Conference

    The 9th Montréal Real Estate Strategy & Leasing Conference took place on October 15, 2015, at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. Mr. Louis-Martin Dubé, a partner at Lavery, took part in this event as panelist for a conference entitled “Negotiating strategies for today’s market: how to understand the deal, resolve key issues, and close the transaction”. This conference targets all executives responsible for their organization’s asset management strategies as well as all the individuals who play an integral role in the leasing process in office, industrial and retail markets

  3. Lavery holds a symposium in Labour and Employment Law in Sherbrooke

    Lavery’s Sherbrooke office organized a symposium in Labour and Employment Law on October 9, 2015. Gathered at the Delta Hotel, about 125 attendees got to participate in various workshops presented by Danielle Gauthier, Jean-François Pagé, Geneviève Chamberland and Dave Bouchard. The topics addressed in this conference revolve around the gathering and use of personal information, recent legal and case-law developments, social media in the workplace and the obligation to discipline dangerous acts before being held responsible by the CSST.

  4. Jean-Philippe Turgeon and Stéphanie Destrempes publish an article in the IBA-International Franchising Newsletter

    Mr. Jean-Philippe Turgeon and Ms. Stéphanie Destrempes of Lavery’s Franchising and distribution group wrote an article in the September 2015 issue of the International Franchising Newsletter of the International Bar Association Legal Practice Division presenting a comparative overview of the application of the implied duty of good faith in franchise agreements in Quebec, following the Dunkin Brand case, and in the rest of Canada and abroad, including the United States, France, United Kingdom and Australia, where franchise is a significant area of the industry.   5. Lavery holds a symposium in Labour and Employment Law in Quebec City

    Lavery’s Quebec City office organized a symposium in Labour and Employment Law on September 30, 2015. Gathered at Hôtel Quartier, about 30 attendees got to participate in various workshops presented by Marie-Hélène Riverin, Charlotte Fortin, Jean-François Pagé and Nicolas Joubert. Speakers addressed many different subjects, starting with a retrospective of decisions of interest in that field, as well as presentations regarding a variety of problems that can arise in the workplace.

  6. Luc Thibaudeau quoted in an article from the Journal du Barreau du Québec

    Luc Thibaudeau, a Litigation partner at Lavery, was quoted in an article from the September 2015 issue of the Journal du Barreau du Québec.The article entitled “Débats sur la langue - Quelles réformes à venir sur l’affichage?” (Language debate - What are the coming reforms for displays?), analyzes legislative modifications that might occur in the Charter of the French Language this fall, and might have an effect on retailers’ displays which, following a recent Quebec Court of Appeal ruling, can be in English. On that subject, Mr. Thibaudeau gives precisions regarding the constitutional issues such provincial legislative changes can bring, while trademarks are of federal jurisdiction.   7. Mary Delli Quadri, speaker at CLHIA

    Mary Delli Quadri, an associate at Lavery, was a speaker at the annual meeting of the legal division of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association ("CLHIA"), held in Halifax from September 30 to October 2. Lavery sponsored the event and was also represented by Ms. Evelyne Verrier. On this occasion, Ms. Delli Quadri reviewed recent Quebec case laws before counsels working for life and health insurance companies and external lawyers present by invitation.

  8. Bernard Larocque, speaker at the Conference on Recent Developments in Insurance Law

    Bernard Larocque of Lavery gave a conference entitled “La proposition d’assurance par internet : où en sommes-nous?” (The online insurance application: where do we stand?), on October 2, 2015 at the Conference on Recent Developments in Insurance Law, organized by the Continuing Education Department of the Quebec Bar. Following an overview of the applicable rules, he discussed the impact the application has on the insurer and insured’s obligations. He also covered the issue of proving the application when completed online. A text was also written and distributed to participants of the seminar, authored by Mr. Jonathan Lacoste-Jobin and Ms. Leïla Yacoubi, both lawyers at Lavery, as well as Bernard Larocque. Ms. Léa Pelletier Marcotte, a student at the firm, also took part in its drafting.

  10. Simon Lemay named Chair of the National Capital Region’s CIUSSS

    Simon Lemay, a partner at Lavery, has just been named Chair of the CIUSSS in the National Capital Region (region 03) by the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Gaétan Barrette. This prestigious nomination marks numerous years of involvement with Centre Jeunesse de Québec, namely as president from 2008 to 2015. Lavery is delighted to see one of its own recognized for his abilities, while many quality entries were considered for this distinguished position. The CIUSSS of the National Capital Region is the result of the merging of numerous institutions, such as the Regional health and social services agency of the National Capital, the Centre de réadaptation en dépendance de Québec, the Centre de réadaptation en déficience intellectuelle de Québec, the health and social services centre in Quebec City, Québec-Nord, Portneuf and Charlevoix, the Institut de réadaptation en déficience physique de Québec, the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Québec and the Centre jeunesse de Québec – Institut universitaire. The CIUSSS is comprised of 14 500 employees.

  11. Gérard Coulombe appointed to the board of directors of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ

    Mr. Gérard Coulombe, Q.C., Ad. E., a Business Law partner at Lavery, was appointed independent member of the board of directors of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ during the annual general meeting which was held on September 26, 2015. Mr. Coulombe carries on a general practice in business and commercial law, focusing in particular on matters involving financial institutions and Crown corporations as well as the formation of financial and industrial conglomerates.
