Two Lavery partners are recognized in the 2017 edition of Chambers Canada
Josée Dumoulin and Jean Saint-Onge, partners at Lavery, have been recognized as leaders in their respective fields, in the 2017 issue of Chambers Canada. Ex-host of ICI Radio-Canada joins Lavery Litigation Group in Trois-Rivières
Lavery is pleased to welcome Frédéric Laflamme to its litigation group, where he will practise in a number of areas related to civil and commercial litigation. After starting out at a national law firm and completing graduate studies in journalism at a French university, Frédéric was a host for ICI Radio-Canada Première for a decade, most notably in Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec; he also took part in numerous national shows. “We are glad that Frederic will add a new chapter to his career by joining the Lavery team. This is an exciting professional challenge that will allow him to put his skills as a litigator to good use for the firm’s clients,” added Jean Boulet, partner and manager of the Lavery Trois-Rivières office.

Three lawyers of Lavery publish an article in the 2016-17 CCCA/ACCJE Corporate Counsel Directory and Yearbook

Lavery marks Guy Lemay’s 50 years at the Bar
Lavery congratulates Guy Lemay on the 50th anniversary of his admission to the Bar, an accomplishment worthy of celebration! His colleagues have paid tribute to him by explaining that: “He has always been a faithful incarnation of an exceptional colleague – a stellar jurist as well as an essential reference. Among other attributes, it is repeatedly noted that his moral strength, his perseverance, as well as his unparalleled competence and the quality of his judgment and his opinions are greatly valued. In addition, it was also mentioned that his availability to assist colleagues, his altruism, his humility, his sunny disposition and his optimism are well-appreciated by all. As a long-time partner at the firm, he is truly viewed as “a great man” and “one of the main builders of Lavery.” Mr. Lemay is a veteran litigator and negotiator in the fields of class actions, employment and labour relations, civil and commercial litigation, as well as pensions and benefits.

Anthonie Vézina-Crawford speaks at an APFF conference in Montreal
Me Anthonie Vézina-Crawford, a lawyer from Lavery’s Family, Personal, and Estate Law group, discussed the rules governing the dissolution of a matrimonial regime as well as the partition of the family patrimony and wills all in the event of a death at a conference held on September 15th on settling estates (Colloque sur le règlement des successions) organized by the Association de Planification Fiscale et Financière in Montreal.

Marie Cossette participates in the “Femmes en finance, femmes en action” conference
On September 13, 2016, Marie Cossette, a partner at the firm, was a panelist during the “l’Effet A…les suites” workshop along with four of her co-leaders of the first cohort of the “Défi 100 jours l’effet A” in Québec. During the workshop, she spoke about the recent survey sponsored by l’Effet A on women’s ambition and shared her thoughts on women in executive positions. The workshop was held within the scope of the Cercle Finance du Québec’s “Femmes en finance, femmes en action...parce qu'oser, c'est gagner” conference. Four hundred people took part in the event, which was capped off with a closing speech by Quebec’s Deputy Premier Lise Thériault.

Chloé Fauchon and Charlotte Fortin participate in a discussion on climate change with the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change
On August 23, 2016, Chloé Fauchon and Charlotte Fortin, as members of Jeunes Philanthropes de Québec, participated in a meeting led by Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Catherine McKenna and Joël Lightbound, MP for Louis-Hébert. The purpose of this meeting was to exchange ideas regarding the steps governments and citizens can take to fight climate change. The Minister was in Quebec City to participate in a series of meetings aimed at reaching a pan-Canadian agreement on clean growth and focused on the fight against climate change planned for this fall. Ms. Fortin also sits on the board of directors of Jeunes Philanthropes de Québec, a not-for-profit organization founded a few years ago by Jean-Simon Deschênes, partner at Lavery and a member of the Business law group. Laurence Bich-Carrière member of the Quebec Bar's civil procedure committee
Laurence Bich-Carrière, a lawyer in the firm’s Litigation group has become a member of the Barreau du Québec’s Comité sur la procédure civile for a four-year mandate that began on September 1st, 2016. The committee is called upon to examine various issues regarding legislative or regulatory changes to civil procedure as well as all changes to Quebec court regulations pertaining thereto.

Lavery participates in IGOPP video clips on SME governance
During June and July, the Institute for Governance of Private and Public Organizations (IGOPP) broadcasted the first video clips in its new series on the governance of SMEs. Two of these clips were presented by André Vautour, partner and chair of Lavery’s Board of Directors. The two clips are “Quand un administrateur est-il en conflit d’intérêts et que doit-il faire dans cette situation ?” and “Les pouvoirs du conseil d’administration peuvent-ils être restreints ou retirés ?”. Four other clips presented by Mr. Vautour on various topics dealing with SME governance will be broadcasted throughout the year and will be available for viewing on the IGOPP youtube channel.

Sébastien Vézina selected as independent arbitrator for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
For the second consecutive year, Lavery partner Sébastien Vézina was selected to sit as an independent arbitrator for the Québec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), one of three major junior leagues in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The three independent QMJHL arbitrators sit on an alternating basis in charge of hearing appeals against appealable official decisions by the QMJHL, its Commissioner or the Board of Governors. This nomination contributes to the good governance and integrity of the league by having an independent party intervene in decisions subject to appeal. Only individuals recognized for their expertise and reputation in sports business and governance are asked to take on this role.
