Étienne Brassard one of Lexpert’s Rising Stars: leading lawyers under 40
Étienne Brassard, a partner in the Business Law Group, received the Rising Stars Award from Lexpert during a gala held in Toronto on November 8. This award pays tribute to lawyers under 40 who are considered rising stars in Canada’s legal community. The winners are selected based on rigorous and well-defined criteria: professional achievements, leadership, contribution to the profitability of the firm, keen business sense, vision, training and teamwork. Étienne Brassard’s practice is focused on private financing, mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate law. Anik Trudel appointed to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal (CCMM)

Lavery welcomes four new professionals at its Montréal office
Lavery is pleased to announce that four new professionals have joined its Montréal office. Marjolaine Arès joins the Business Law group as a partner. She has over 20 years of experience in commercial real estate law, and also specializes in lobbying law, mining and energy law, and telecommunications law. As a notary, Mrs. Arès undertakes the steps required for certifying and legalizing documentation in an effort to ensure their validity when intended for various foreign countries. Parity certification: Lavery celebrates the commitment of new parity certified companies
As a Business Pioneer in Parity Certification, Lavery is proud of the commitment made by law firms and newly certified companies to help increase the representation of women in leadership positions. Lavery welcomes three new lawyers at its Quebec City office
Lavery is pleased to announce that three new lawyers have joined its Québec City office. Martin St-Amant (Barreau 1989, Corporate Law) completed his civil law degree at the University of Ottawa and holds a diploma from the Institute of Higher International Studies in Paris and a doctorate from the Université de Paris Sorbonne in international commercial law. He was part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiating team. His clients include corporations of all sizes that he advises on business immigration and on both national and international commercial law and intellectual property matters. Antoine Motulsky-Falardeau (Barreau 2003, Litigation Group) practises civil and commercial litigation and private international law. He advises and represents public and private corporations, shareholders, entrepreneurs and organizations in relation to their business and disputes in the areas of transportation, energy, franchising, construction, insurance, the garment trade, and the arts, in particular. He also teaches private international law at the Laval University Faculty of Law. Renalda Ponari (Barreau 2018, Litigation Group) joined the Lavery team in the winter of 2018. She completed her civil law degree at the University of Ottawa and the Barreau du Québec’s professional training program en 2017. Renalda was a constitutional law research assistant and worked for a law firm in the Gatineau region and for the Department of Justice Canada while she was a law student.

Guillaume Lavoie, one of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers
Guillaume Lavoie has been recognized by Canadian Lawyer as one of the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada in 2018 (Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers, 2018). He is listed in the Young Influencer category. Guillaume Lavoie is a partner and head of the private equity and venture capital (Lavery CAPITAL) group and coordinates the mergers & acquisitions team. He is also a member of Lavery’s board of directors. In 2015, Guillaume was recognized by Lexpert as one of the leading lawyers under 40 in Canada. Also that year, he won the Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) lawyer of the year award in the Corporate Law category. In 2017, he was one of the finalists in the Quebec Young Professional category in the Arista competition held by the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Montreal.

Lavery represents EBI in a $70 million transaction
On June 26, 2018, the QFL Solidarity Fund announced a $70 million investment in EBI, a leading Quebec and Canadian firm active in the integrated residual materials sector, including the collection and transport of waste matter, recyclables and residual materials, the transformation, recovery and disposal of residual materials as well as the production of natural gas. A Lavery client for the past two decades, EBI has been represented by the firm in connection with every legal aspect of this investment initiative. The Lavery team, spearheaded by André Paquette, with the assistance of Jacques Paul-Hus, was composed of Nadia Hanine (Mergers & Acquisitions), Éric Gélinas (Taxation), Pierre Denis (Financial Services), Audrey-Julie Dallaire (Environment), Carolle Vaudry and Isabelle Normand (Corporate).

Lavery hires three of its articling students
Lavery is pleased to announce that it has hired three of its articling students as associates. Camille Côté has joined the Business Law group of our Trois-Rivières office. While a law student at the Université de Montréal law faculty, Camille volunteered with Pro Bono Québec on a project to prepare small claims court hearings, organize conferences and mentored students during the articling recruiting process. Blanche Fournier has joined the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group of our Sherbrooke office. She holds a Bachelor of Law degree, internship program, from the Université de Sherbrooke. During her legal studies, Blanche had the opportunity to take part in two professional internships in major financial institutions and in a law firm practising in civil litigation. She has also tutored new law students. William Lacoste has joined the Litigation and Conflict Resolution group of our Montréal office. He obtained his Bachelor’s in both Civil and Common Law from McGill University. During his studies, he worked as the Director of human and material resources at the Legal Information Clinic at McGill, where he was responsible for training and supervising more than 150 student volunteers. “We are very proud to welcome talent like Camille, Blanche and William into the Lavery family. Patrick A. Molinari appointed Ethics Commissioner at VIA Rail
On June 18, Patrick A. Molinari, attorney-legal counsel with the firm’s Health Law division, was appointed to the position of Ethics Commissioner for VIA-Rail’s entire program for modernizing its Quebec-Windsor corridor fleet, from the procurement stages up until the final delivery. The role of Commissioner will hear and manage complaints from employees or third parties regarding reprehensible acts and presumed ethical issues (including financial irregularities, misuse of public funds, allegations of legal or Code of Ethics breaches, etc.) and will see to the swift and fair resolution of any disputes.
