The Quebec Bar Organizes a Conference on Class Actions
With the collaboration of our partner, Jean Saint-Onge, the continuing professional education department of the Quebec Bar will again offer its members a thematic workshop. To be held on October 25 and 26, the workshop will be entitled “Recours collectif: Développements récents au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe” [Class actions: recent developments in Quebec, Canada and the United States]. Mr. Saint-Onge will chair the conference, in addition to being a speaker. Michel Yergeau will also participate as a speaker.

Exceptionally, the Bar of Quebec is giving the Mérite du Barreau award for this year to two lawyers from our firm. Michel Yergeau will receive a Mérite award to draw attention to the whole of his professional work, including the development of environmental law and public consultation practices in Quebec. Jean Saint-Onge will also receive a Mérite award for his continued support of the Bar of Quebec as well as his contributions to the community, notably as Chairman of the Board of the Fondation Marie-Vincent for the past 10 years. The Bar of Quebec will also honour 30 lawyers, including Odette Jobin-Laberge, J. Vincent O’Donnell, Jean Saint-Onge and Michel Yergeau, when a new title is awarded: Ad.E. This honorary title recognizes the excellence of lawyers having outstanding careers. Recipients will be able to add the letters Ad. E. following their name.

Lavery, de Billy advises Stingray Resources Inc. on a $50M deal
Stingray Resources Inc. has conducted a prospectus financing for more than $50M. The proceeds from the financing enabled it to fund the entire acquisition of the El Pilar project, purchased from Xstrata plc. Stingray Resources Inc. is a Canadian mining exploration company that concentrates its activities in Mexico.Michel Blouin and Sébastien Vézina advised this client with respect to the financing and acquisition while Philip Nolan and Luc Pariseau reviewed the tax aspects of the acquisition of El Pilar.

Eloda Corporation carries out a $15M private placement
Eloda Corporation has entered into an agreement with Research Capital Corporation (RCC) for a private placement of common shares for up to $15M. The proceeds from the private placement will be used to fund the purchase of capture stations as part of Eloda’s expansion in the U.S. and for general working capital purposes. Eloda Corporation is a company which provides a new generation of capture-index-verify applications for television advertising without the traditional need for pre-encoding.Sébastien Vézina and Benoit Mallette advised Eloda on the financing and acquisition aspects, whereas Philippe Asselin reviewed the tax aspects of the transaction.

Lavery, de Billy represents Menu Foods in three class actions
Lavery, de Billy has been retained to represent Menu Foods, a manufacturer and distributor of dog and cat foods (Iams, Purina, Nutro, Eukanuba), in connection with three class actions recently filed in the Quebec Superior Court for the district of Montreal.These lawsuits result from a recall by Menu Foods in March 2007 following allegations that pets had died due to kidney failure related to the consumption of its food, which is distributed across North America.Multi Foods’s defence will be lead by Jean Saint-Onge, with the assistance of Jean-Philippe Lincourt and Anne-Marie Lévesque.

The Executive of Young Lawyers – CBA welcomes Marie-Hélène Fandrich
In June, Marie-Hélène Fandrich was appointed a member of the Executive of Young Lawyers – Canadian Bar Association. She will assume this responsibility for 2007-2008.

Michel Blouin Knighted by the Queen of Denmark
In recognition of his valued services as Consul, the Queen of Denmark appointed our partner Michel Blouin as a First Class Knight of the Danebrog Order.This order of chivalry was founded in 1219. It was reorganized in 1691 by King Christian V and membership was limited to 50 knights. In 1808, King Frederic VI opened up the Order, which progressively came to be used for rewarding exceptional civil and military accomplishments. Membership in the Order, which may also be granted to foreigners, is not awarded frequently.

Brian Elkin Appointed President of Canadian Defence Lawyers
Since June 1, 2007, Brian Elkin holds the presidency of Canadian Defence Lawyers. The mission of this Canada-wide association is to provide continuing education to civil defence lawyers and insurance industry workers and protect the interests of these two groups. With more than 1,000 members, the association closely collaborates with the Defence Research Institute.

Three Lavery, de Billy Lawyers Will Lecture at a Labour Law Event
On September 24 and 25, 2007, Pierre Baribeau will co-chair the third conference on the duty of accommodation in the workplace organized by Insight Information. In addition, Mr. Baribeau will give a lecture, the theme of which will be “To risk or to test?” Véronique Morin will also lecture. The theme of her presentation will be “Case Law Examples and Legislative Orientations on the Issue of the Aging Workforce: Specifics in the Event of Employment Termination or Accommodation Requests”. For her part, Vicky Lemelin will lead a workshop, the theme of which will be “Absences Related to Certain Dependencies: Accommodation or Termination?” The event will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel, in Montreal.

YBAM Conference : Jean Philippe Lincourt is giving a lecture on class actions
On May 4, 2007, Jean-Philippe Lincourt lectured at the annual joint convention of the Young Bar Association of Montreal and the American Bar Association – Young Lawyers Division. The theme of the lecture was “Something New in Paradise? The Agropur Case and its Effects”.

On April 19, 2007, in Toronto, the Canadian member firms of the World Services Group (WSG) welcome clients and business acquaintances at a conference on new developments in insurance and litigation.
